Sunday Song by Antony and the Johnsons

Today, I have been in a relfective frame of mind and have been listening to Antony and the Johnsons breakthrough 2nd LP from 2005 'I am a Bird'. It took me a while to really enjoy this album when it came out but over time the layers of this album really do reveal something completely unexpected and beautiful. Antony's voice is so unique and the songs he create are like musical landscapes. There are some amazing tracks on this album which include collaborations with Rufus Wainwright and Boy George. Two of my favourite tracks are YOU ARE MY SISTER and FISTFUL OF LOVE. Have a great Sunday!

RECORD STORES VISITED

Ooh its a new Sophie Song

The Sophie Ellis Bextor has made a song with French DJ Bob Sinclar called FUCK WITH YOU. OK then if I must! I was reading an interview with Sophie on her website about the birth of baby number 3 (she's probably giving birth as you read this) and then this video appears! Check it out! The video is very similar to THE ONE by Kylie Minogue don't you think, except this one has more 'lips'. I think I could get used to Saucy Sophie!

Boy George vs Lana Del Rey

I am very surprised that I have yet to write a post about Boy George. I only idiolised him from the years 1984 to 1998 (or there abouts) religiously. I guess I should write some more about the Boy George years. Anyway he has gone and done a cover of the Luscious Lana Del Rey song VIDEO GAMES (see below) which will be on an upcoming self-released covers album. The song seems to suit his husky voice and I definitely think ballads are where its at for George. This reminds me of George's post-Jesus Loves You (1991-1994) period where he became very folky and was singing very stripped back songs like YOU ARE THE DEAL (which metamorphised into THE DEAL).
The Boy with Lana!

And in other George related news he has had a few ups and downs on Twitter of late with his account being spammed. His last tweets suggest he may be having a rest for a while. See the below.

Sunday Song by Kimbra (again)

I went to see the Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney which is a must for me every year. This is an annual art prize in portraiture. This year there is an amazing portrait of the New Zealand singer Kimbra. Here it is for you. Isn't it amazing? The artist is Vincent Fantauzzo who has painted some of the most popular entries in the Archibald over the last few years.

A video was made to accompany the portrait of Kimbra's song BUILD IT UP. Art coming to life? Check it out below. Totes Amazeballs!!!

Today is 2012 RECORD STORE DAY

Today is 2012 Record Store Day where music and vinyl lovers get to celebrate the joy of purchasing music, whether that be a CD or vinyl from your local record store. There are UNIQUE special releases just for today from a cavalcade of artists from around the world.  There is a strong focus on vinyl (or as my brother-in law likes to call them - Liquorice Pizzas) but there are also some special cd releases to enjoy.

I will be heading down to Red Eye Records in Sydney to see if I can get the 7inch of Bat for Lashes cover of Depeche Mode's STRANGELOVE. Other special releases on my hit list include the David Bowie STARMAN 7inch Picture Disc. Oooooh I love a Picture Disc. They are releasing the soundtrack to Pretty in Pink on Pink Vinyl. OMG!!!  Luscious Lana Del Rey get's in on the act by releasing BORN TO DIE on 7inch too. You can watch the Official Film for 2012 Record Store Day below:

Sunday Song by Feist

So this post is slightly late, well its still Sunday in the USA so not entirely. I have been listening to FEIST album Metals of late and the video for BITTERSWEET MELODIES has just been released. Its a lovely song and the video features the photographs of Irina Werning from her Back to the Future series of photographs. There are some striking images as Irina recreates photos that were taken years ago with the same model, pose and setting. Perfect listening for a Sunday/Monday evening.

Record Store Day 21 April 2012

2012 Record Store Day will soon be with us and you are officially forewarned Vinyl Luver readers - 21 April 2012. Write this date in your diary NOW! Its amazing how this day has taken off in recent years with events taking place all over the world and records being released just for the day. Last year I sent a text to those nearest and dearest to me urging them to visit a record store to purchase music in a physical format . Last year I headed to Red Eye Records in Sydney and purchased the Best Coast LP Crazy For You and Kylie's GET OUTTA MY WAY on 7 inch picture disc.
Head to the Record Store Day Website for a full list of releases and participating stores. They have lists of releases for certain countries and more will be added as the day approaches.
I received this email from Sister Ray Records in London. Now this is where I want to be on Record Store Day!

"This year there will be exclusive releases from Kate Bush, Arcade Fire, Bruce Springsteen, PiL, Coldplay, Elbow, Metallica, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys, Vaccines and many many more. It’s going to be the busiest year yet so GET HERE EARLY!!

There will be in-store signing sessions with JIM KERR and CHARLIE BURCHILL from SIMPLE MINDS, an appearance from BILLY BRAGG and more super-special guests throughout the day. On top of that ST ETIENNE’s BOB STANLEY and legendary music journalist PETE PAPHIDES have agreed to work behind the counter!

All customers that purchase a Record Store Day release will be entered into a special draw to win an exclusive ‘white label’ test pressing of Jack White’s forthcoming album ‘Blunderbuss’."

I will be definitely partaking in Record Store Day activities, whether that involves a trip to Red Eye Records or another store. Once again I urge you to head out and purchase some music from your local music store. In the last year HUM Records has closed down its 2 stores in Sydney and its so important to support Music stores so they don't close. SO GO OUT AND BUY SOME MUSIC ON 21 APRIL 2012!!!!!

Here is my previous post of My Favourite Record Stores.
