I'm off to see Bat for Lashes tomorrow night and I can't wait to hear LAURA. LAURA which was the lead single from the Bats 3rd album The Haunted Man, and also one of my favourite tracks of 2012. I am very excited to be seeing Natasha Khan in the comforts of the Enmore Theatre in Sydney.
Bat for Lashes is kind of a mish mash of various genres of music. She's moody, atmospheric, part tribal, an electronica queen. Lots of beats with a lovely voice to boot. I like her uniqueness in today's bland world of pop. In some ways she reminds me of the Kate Bush and sometimes Bjork. I also like the fact that she released a cover of Depeche Mode's STRANGELOVE for Record Store Day last year. You can listen to it below.
Here are my top 10 Songs from 2012. Read em and weep. A cross section of artists and style of music which is just how I like it. I can't put these songs in order but if I had to choose my favourite song it would be between Bat for Lashes and Lanas!
I fell in love with this song after the first play. Its a very simple ballad but it just gets to the heart of me. I have never been a huge fan of Natasha Khan but this song is amazing and takes me to another place.
Lana del Rey has been one of my favourite acts this year. I probably played her album more than any other this year. I love the opening lyrics to this song - "I'm your national anthem, God you're so handsome, take me to the Hamptons, Bugatti Veyron". Pure brilliance.
The Best Australian pop song of 2012! I adore Catcall. Catherine Kelleher is amazing and it is obscene that this song has only been viewed 54,000 times on utubes. This woman should be HUGE!!!!!
So I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this song sung by Australian (from my hometown of Adelaide) Sia. The song is by David Guetta but lets be honest the vocal by Sia is KILLER! The song i most heard everytime i walked into a shop in 2012!
2012 has been Kylie's year as she celebrated K25. Timebomb was released in the middle of the year and is a fabulous dance track. I managed to see Kylie this year on her Anti Tour and you can read about that here as well as my Kylie K25 post.
OK so this technically is a 2011 track but i fell in love with this band this year and they also released their longplayer. Their dreamy vocals and European sound really make me smile.
The Pets have been going for something like 27 years and they released their Elysium album this year. This was a standout track on Elysium (their 11th studio album) and as a proud Pet Shop Boys Fan Club member I just love Neil and Chris.
Bat for Lashes is BACK with the defining song of her career as she gets ready to release her 3rd longplayer The Haunted Man in October. The 1st single off the album is LAURA and it is a stomper of a ballad. The song's brilliance is in its simplicity. Natasha's voice and lyrics take this 4 minute masterpiece to another level of pop fantabulousness. This song is already in my top 5 of the year. FACT!
Today is 2012 Record Store Day where music and vinyl lovers get to celebrate the joy of purchasing music, whether that be a CD or vinyl from your local record store.There are UNIQUE special releases just for today from a cavalcade of artists from around the world. There is a strong focus on vinyl (or as my brother-in law likes to call them - Liquorice Pizzas) but there are also some special cd releases to enjoy.
I will be heading down to Red Eye Records in Sydney to see if I can get the 7inch of Bat for Lashes cover of Depeche Mode's STRANGELOVE. Other special releases on my hit list include the David Bowie STARMAN 7inch Picture Disc. Oooooh I love a Picture Disc. They are releasing the soundtrack to Pretty in Pink on Pink Vinyl. OMG!!!
